LibriVox recording of A House to Let, by Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Elizabeth Gaskell and Adelaide Anne Procter. Read by Ruth Golding.

A House to Let is a novella originally published in 1858 in the Christmas edition of Dickens' Household Words magazine. Each of the contributors wrote a chapter (stories within a story, and in the case of Adelaide Anne Procter, as a story in verse) and the whole was edited by Dickens.

The plot concerns an elderly woman, Sophonisba, who notices signs of life in a supposedly empty dilapidated house (the eponymous "House to Let") opposite her own, and employs the efforts of an elderly admirer, Jabez Jarber, and her servant, Trottle, to discover what is happening within. (Summary by Ruth Golding and Wikipedia)

Subject: Mixed review
This book is a collaboration of stories joined together by the main character. Each section has a different author, and the styles of writing change from section to section. I think that is why I wasn't as pleased by this story as the other reviewers were.

Some of the sections were difficult to follow, others were excellent. Overall, this is an okay book.

The reader was excellent and has a great reading voice. She did a nice job. I just found the story difficult to get into.

Subject: Delightful collaboration
I enjoyed the collaboration. You don't quite know where the next chapter is going to take you.

Ruth does an excellent job reading this solo project - she's so easy to listen to, and so subtly expressive.

Subject: An amusing conundrum...
This story revolves around a house which is apparently vacant--or is it? The plot goes through many twists and turns in the search for an answer to this question.

Ruth Golding's narrations is wonderful, adding greatly to the characterizations and comic touches throughout. Thank you!
